We work with nonprofits and community organizations every day, and we see how much of their work goes unnoticed. The Community Spotlight is our way of changing that.
Each feature introduces an organization: their mission, who they serve, the programs they run, what they need most, volunteer opportunities, and how you can support them.
Who they are: A 501(c)(3) nonprofit ministry serving people experiencing homelessness — and families right on the edge of it — in the Athens area. It's run by Donna Townsend, who knows the people she serves the way family knows each other.
What they do:
• Deliver hot meals and food bags directly to their homeless friends, wherever they are
• Weekly shower day and laundry day
• A full Thanksgiving dinner every year, with gift bags for each guest — candy plus restaurant gift cards
• Christmas wish lists for struggling families, fulfilled item by item by the community — down to rent and utility bills
• Emergency help: a winter coat for a man working with none, a vehicle for a woman who just got housing and a full-time job, groceries and rides for families with no car
Why we chose them: This is what "making the invisible visible" looks like up close. Beyond Blessed doesn't serve a population — they know people by name, show up week after week, and become, in Donna's words, "mom and grandmom to many over the years." They find the people everyone else walks past, including families who never asked for help at all.
"Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much." — the quote they've adopted as their own, and the way they work every day.
How to help: They run on community generosity — donated food, $25–30 restaurant gift cards for the Thanksgiving bags, and funds for emergency rent and utility help. Find Beyond Blessed on Facebook (Athens, AL) to see their current needs and give directly.
